The story
The 2013 project was built with three partners: Pastor Val Chavez of Foursquare Philippines, Bishop Efraim Tendero of the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches, and Carisa Cruz of Abundant Life Christian Fellowship in Mountain View, California, whose team travelled on April 21, 2013. With Foursquare Philippines and PCEC the elements were food and kitchen items as gifts, medical brigades and concerts with discipleship follow-up. With ALCF, Carisa Cruz's team planned to build bathrooms for Young Life Cebu and spend time with young people there.
The medical and dental brigades ran in three locations and were coordinated by Philippine Relief and Development Services, Pure Works, Foursquare Philippines and local barangay officials, with medicine provided by MAP International and King's Benevolent Fund. The outreach theme was "Only 1", the same idea used in Zambia: each believer brings one person they know to an event and takes responsibility for walking with them afterwards. The "Only 1" Festival Drama and Concert was set for June 2013 in Cavite, Davao and Cebu, a free two-hour concert by a US band with a drama in the middle. Pastors from the US also visited churches around Manila to encourage and pray with Filipino pastors and staff.
When Typhoon Haiyan, known as Yolanda in the Philippines, struck in November 2013, Pure Works and Pure Works SoCal responded with medicine gifted by MAP International and a team of medical personnel. Medicine in large quantities entering the Philippines must be authenticated, and MAP International had given more than US$1.95 million in wholesale medicine the year before and US$656,316.56 that year, with more to come from others. The 2019 brief describes a mission from February 1 to 17 to Manila, Cavite and Mindanao: one or more doctors and about twelve volunteers, musicians and singers among them, medicine valued at more than US$10,000 wholesale, eight mornings of medical seminars and eight afternoons of free treatment, and leadership training in planning, evaluation and stewardship that Filipino pastors had asked for. The team also planned to join the Will Graham Hope Celebration. It was coordinated with Bishop Efraim Tendero, then Secretary General of the World Evangelical Alliance, and the PCEC, under the covering of Foursquare CBAY and Abundant Life Christian Fellowship.
